Definitia cuvantului hacker

„About the Cover:

A close-up of a wafer of 256k dynamic random access memories (RAMs). Now being manufactured at Western Electric, these memories are among the most sophisticated of their kind now in production.”

Hackers in the Night

At an hour when most students are considering sleep, the computer center at Wean Hall, Carnegie-Mellon University (Pittsburgh) begins to come alive. Over two dozens students hack away at their terminals in a lab called the SPICE (Scientific Personal Interactive Computing Environment) rack. This is the world of the hacker, the term applied to students who spend literally hours seated at terminals tinkering with computer programs. The term hacker is derived from the word „hack”, computer slang for an elegant (and stylized) correction to malfunctioning software.

The hacker is today’s educational recluse. Hackers spend long stretches of time isolated from other students, interacting only with a computer. It is not uncommon for hackers to spend 24 hours in a lab, surviving on soft drinks and candy bars, while working on a problem. Stanford psychologist Philip Zimbardo characterized the hacker’s plight as a „. . . fascination with the computer that becomes an addiction. . . . ” To hackers, their intensity for computer is normal, and represents „just doing something with enthusiasm.”

Computer labs such as those at Carnegie-Mellon, Stanford, and MIT have spawned a new generation of computer specialists such as Herb Simon, Allen Newell, and Roy Reddy. Many hackers continue with their obsession with computers after graduation, taking programming jobs at companies in the forefront of computer research. It is not the money that attracts them, it’s the idea of creating something new.”
